Linux Mint 9

Ok, you have an old computer but its OS has been outdated for a while with an old processor and not too much RAM and your thinking about just putting it in the trash.

HANG ON!! Install MINT 9

Mint 9 is a great free operating system that you can download. Its part of the Linux community(don’t be scared, it is probably more user friendly than Windows 7) and can run on older operating systems with less hardware. My kids are using this on an old Pentium3 computer for surfing the web, it works fine for this application and many others.

How did they hack my password? Social Engineering

Did you know that most passwords are hacked by social engineering. What the hell is that? Ah, no problem, let me explain.

Social Engineering is the art of finding facts out about people in an attempt to gain access to their private accounts and information. This can be done simply by standing over someones shoulder as they are loging in, or finding out their kids names, birth dates, anniversary, phone number, etc. (oh ya, NEVER use these for passwords, all of them are so commonly used they are the first attempts.)

So remember, a co-worker asking to many questions, a service tech standing over your shoulder as you login, some one being just too friendly or chatty, all this could be social engineering to access you personal information. Or just your ordinary conversations and routine repair man, but never chance it.

WIFI Router, do I really have to secure it?

No, but if you don’t you could find yourself with slow down load speeds and high charges from going over your limits.

Securing your WIFI Router is relatively easy and definately worth the trouble. If you have nosy neighbours or ones that like to download a lot of data you could be in trouble.

Don't let everyone download on your dime!

WEP or WPA2 encription, is there really a difference?

Yes there is. WEP also known as wire equivelant privacy can be easily broken with hacker tools accessible on the internet. WPA2 is much more secure and to date has never been broken.
